El Merreikh face Atraco test in Kagame Cup finale
Coach Sam Timbe will be all out to rewrite Cecafa history when he leads his Atraco troops at the El Merriekh stadium turf this evening in the 2009 Kagame Club Championship final against the home side.
The Ugandan coach has won this title with SC Villa (2005) and Police (2006), making him the most decorated tactician in the tournament in the last 20 years. “I am not looking at anything like winning the trophy with a third different team in a period of five years, but taking the final like any other game of football” said Timbe during an interview.
After shocking KCC FC in the quarter finals and leaving it late in their 2-1 semi-final win against Mathare United, Sam Timbe’s Atraco can not be taken so lightly, but they will come against an El Merreikh side that has kept a 100 per ecnt record and will be backed by over 35,000 fans.
El Merreikh who play archrivals El Hilal in a champions league group tie on July 18 have said they badly need to win this title as a morale booster ahead of next weekend’s game. “Winning this final will give us the best rythem and morale to push on, said El Merreikh’s Croatian coach Radan Jacket.
The Nigerian trio of Indorance Idahor (five goals), Klechi Osunwa (three goals) and Steven Worgu (one gaol) are expected to lead the home side as they attempt to snatch the trophy the team last won in 1994.
But Timbe has also said nothing would be as good as taking the trophy back to Rwanda . “I would be a perfect reward to Rwanda football if we won that game. But we need to fight first,” said Timbe
Ugandan players Hamis Kitagenda, Mike Ssebalinga, Alimansi Kadogo, Charles Kawuma, Peter Kagabo and defender Godfrey Kateregga together with Rwanda national team player Alou Gaseruka and Congolese born Andre Lomami will lead Atraco’s attempt at winning the trophy they have never won.
Although El Merreikh eliminated the same Atraco FC side 2-1 on aggeragte in the early round of the champions league and beat them 6-1 in the opening group A game of this tournament, nothing should be taken for granted because a final is always a different ball game with a lot at stake.
But before the grand finale, the Congolese side TP Mazembe will be out chasing US$20,000 for the third place as they battle Francis Kimanzi’s Mathare United in a play-off tie.
The winner takes home US$50,000 and the runner-up bags US$30,000.
